Aim: This course introduces the core principles of Motivational Interviewing and aims to help practioners in the field of domestic abuse  to develop an understanding of the Motivational Interviewing technique and be able to confidently apply the practices and techniques of Motivational Interviewing with their work with service users 
 

 Length of course: 2 days  

Resources: PowerPoint presentations, Flipchart, Video Presentations of Motivational Interviewing in Practice, Course Packs, Reference Resources. All participants will receive a course pack with a selection of Motivational Interviewing handouts and easy to use guide to Motivational Interviewing which will provide participants with lots of helpful trigger questions and general information.   

Method of Teaching: A variety of teaching methods will be used during the course of the day tailored to the different ways in which participants learn. Presentations, Case Studies, Group Activities, Group Discussions and Thought Showers will be used to generate discussion, improve knowledge and develop skills to understand and apply Motivational Interviewing to their work. Furthermore training exercises which allow participants to practice Motivational Interviewing skills acquired during the course will also be used throughout the course to ensure that participants are able to improve on the techniques before applying them in their respective work with service users.  

Course Content: ·         Introduction to Motivational Interviewing – highlighting key themes and principles.·         What is motivation? What motivates people to change? & How to assess motivation when working with the client group·         Motivational Interviewing & the stages of change·         Exploring the main principles of Motivational Interviewing·         Building motivation to change·         How to work effectively with resistance·         Using Motivational Interviewing in challenging situations – coercion, time limitations, chaotic lifestyles·         Motivational Interviewing & maintaining change – how to support service users at this stage ·         Provide participants with further information about resources, current research and useful sites on the subject.·         Course Evaluation & reflection

Learning Outcomes
By the end of the course participants will be able to:

  • Describe and understand the main principles of Motivational Interviewing
  • Have a better understanding of and work more effectively with service users ambivalence about change
  • Be able to assist service users to assess their own readiness to change and make appropriate decisions about their behaviour in relation to the stages of change model
  • Use reflective listening skills and open questions to elicit change talk
  • Be aware of resistance and be able to roll with resistance
  • Be able to effectively apply a range of Motivational Interviewing strategies during their work with service users to promote change

 Counsel individuals about their domestic abuse using recognised theoretical models·        

Relate to and interact with individuals·        

Support individuals who are victims of domestic abuse
